At first, it seemed like a novel idea – aligning a shopping mall brand with good will. In today’s tough economy, the standard “come to our mall” pitch wouldn’t likely work; especially in light of the fact that a much larger destination with highly recognizable brand name stores was about to open in the same community. “Through ‘Kindness Is Your Currency,’ we will reward people who already spend time and money to support organizations in our community,” said Larry Hunt, Property Manager of The Summit.

With the closing of our local television station, CHCA-TV my ears perk up when ever I hear via radio, TV, blogs or face2face conversations mention of possible new options. On Sunday, while we were driving down to Innisfail to meet-up with some friends, CBC news from Calgary was on the Jeep’s radio (yes – I still listen to radio). I caught the end of a segment on how a new voice of journalism can be found in ‘hyper-local’ news-papers.Since I had never heard the term “hyper-local” before, I couldn’t wait to Google it. “Hyper-local” primarily refers to news coverage of community-level events.

I am a member of the Independence Caucus ( http://icaucus.ning.com and http://ourcaucus.com/ ), an organization whose primary mission is to replace our compromised, fiscally irresponsible incumbents with good men and women who share our principles and values. Every conservative group shares that same goal and we have something to offer the other groups that they cannot do for themselves or their members. We truly are the last-mile solution to get the job done.

I don’t think I’m addicted to these things, but I do use social networking a fair bit. On the microblogging front I use Twitter (mostly posting via Identi.ca ). For the classic social networking stuff I’m on Facebook and LinkedIn . I’m scrobbling my audio to last.fm , there is of course this blog receiving occasional posts and I’ve been on IRC for far too long . I’m also on Jabber .

Mobile social networking is a trend that is growing at an incredible rate; it could soon overtake the need to access a computer for all social networking activities. Social networking companies, like Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace, have partnered together with mobile phone carriers and mobile phone manufacturers to ensure that their communities not only featured prominently within the web start pages but that their mobile applications function correctly on all internet-ready mobile phones.

Last week I posted “ It’s a jungle out there: words of caution for negotiating social media “, an article with my recommendations about using social media wisely and courteously. What spurred me to write it were some unpleasant and fortunately isolated experiences with shameless marketers on social media sites. I noted the irony when yesterday I received an email from someone I’d recently connected with on one of those sites. The message read as follows: You are among the many contacts of [name omitted].
